Avila Comes Through Tough Test In Salinas


Featherweight prospect Manuel “Tino” Avila went, 14 14-0-(5), Monday scoring a hard fought 10 round unanimous decision over Enrique “Cuate” Quevedo, 15-7-1-(9), at the Storm House in Salinas, California.

 

Quevedo proved a formidable foe throughout the fight but Avila kept his composure, dug deep into his resources and was eventually rewarded by knocking down Quevedo with a left hook in the 10th round. The scores of 97-92 on all three judges cards did not do Quevedo justice.

 

On the undercard middleweight Paul “El Gallo Negro” Mendez improved to, 15-2-2-(7), with a third round knock out win over Raul “El Tigre” Casarez. A right hand decked Casarez. After 0.43.

 

At lightweight Andy Vences improved to, 7-0-(3), when Dominic Coca failed to come out for the fourth round claiming a hand injury.

 

Diego De La Hoya, 3-0-(3), scored a first round stoppage win over Sergio Najera. De La Hoya decked Najera with a left hook before the fight was stopped after 2:14.
