Beijing Olympian and highly touted middleweight prospect, Billy Joe Saunders pounded out a hard fought 12 round victory over Ireland’s Gary "Spike" O’Sullivan on the Chisora - Scott undercard at Wembley Arena on Saturday.
Saunders, 23, looked in control of the contest in the first half of the fight, throwing combinations from the southpaw stance, but the tough and measured O’Sullivan proved to be a stern test for the Hertfordshire man.
Although most of the action went Saunders way, O’Sullivan came on late in the fight, landing a series of blows which had his opponent buzzed in the 11th.
However, Saunders sheer volume of work and higher accuracy resulted in a unanimous decision victory with scores of 120-109, 120-109, 119-110 which didn’t do O’Sullivan’s effort justice.
With the win Saunders claims the WBO intercontinental middleweight title and looks ahead to a September showdown with rival John Ryder.
