British boxing lost a true and valued servant on Monday when popular Worcestershire based boxer Billy Smith known as ‘Gypsy Boy’ went missing on Monday. The 35 year-old was discovered on Tuesday, he reportedly took his own life.
His twin brother, Ernie, who was also a professional boxer, also committed suicide three and a half years earlier.
Smith, a solid value for money journeyman, turned professional in 2000 and took on all the young prospects, pretty much always taking them the distance.
Smith may have ended his career with a highly unflattering record of 13-145-2, but he was so much better than that. He often mixed it with top prospects and future world champions such as Ricky Burns, John Murray, Gavin Rees and Jamie Cox, and gave them all the trouble they could handle.
British boxing has lost a true and loyal servant, more importantly the Smith family have lost yet another of their siblings in tragic circumstance. SecondsOut sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family at this very sad time.
