Billy Nelson, the trainer of WBO lightweight champ Ricky Burns has announced that he will fight on despite having reportedly been fitted with a titanium plate after sustaining a horrific jaw injury during his latest title defence against Raymundo Beltran in Glasgow last Saturday.
Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times, Nelson said: "Ricky had a plate screwed in to support his jaw and it will take six weeks to heal.
"As long as it is all knitted, which they expect it will, they will remove the plate and he will be able to continue his career no problem."
Nelson added: "There is no doubt that he won’t box again. These operations are done on a daily basis. There is no inclination that he would never fight again. If a football player breaks his leg, he plays football again.
"They (some people) are wrong saying what has been said (that he wouldn’t fight again)."
Burns retained his WBO crown via a controversial majority 12 round draw. Most ringsiders thought Beltran had done enough to win the title.
