Commonwealth Cruiserweight Champion Tony Conquest says he’ll have to be on the ball if he is going to keep hold of his title in the first defence against hard-hitting Ovill McKenzie.
Conquest, who won the belt in a brutal battle against Daniel Ammann in February, takes on McKenzie on the title packed show at the Copper Box Arena in London tomorrow night (Saturday 12th April) alongside Frank Buglioni, Bradley Skeete and Lewis Pettitt.
The Romford boxer knows he’ll have to be at his best against McKenzie - a two-time Commonwealth champion at light-heavyweight - who gave Enzo Maccarinelli a tough fight last time before being stopped in the eleventh round.
He said, “If you’re a champion you can’t pick and choose who you’re gonna fight. Eventually you’re going to have to fight good men.
“I’d rather fight someone who gives me that little bit of fear in my belly because I know I have to fight and it makes be better.
“When I boxed Wadi Camacho I knew he was a terrific puncher and a big old lump. That gave me the added little bit of incentive and the adrenalin was pumping.
“If you look at his body. Ovill’s legs aren’t that big but his upper body is like a cruiserweight. He is the complete polar opposite of me.
“There is a big jump from light-heavyweight to cruiserweight but he’s beaten big lumps like Buster Keaton and Terry Dunstan. Ovill got his tactics right against them and showed he isn’t just a big puncher, but also has a bit of a brain.
“I will have to be right on the ball.
“He is dangerous all the time, and I will have to be on my guard especially early on when he has won before.
“Ovill does get a little bit tired, but when you look how much muscle there is on him he’s gonna get a little bit tired.
“The first six rounds is when he’ll be at his most dangerous and I’m expecting to come in stronger than ever because he hasn’t got any weight troubles.”
The Power Of London show features the next generation of boxing stars: WBO European Super-Middleweight Champion Frank Buglioni defends his title against Sergey Khomitsky, Commonwealth Cruiserweight Champion Tony Conquest defends against Ovill McKenzie, WBA Intercontinental Welterweight Champion Bradley Skeetedefends against Guiseppe Loriga, and Lewis Pettit and Emerson Santos Carvalho clash for the Vacant WBA International Super-Bantamweight Title.
