Cox Follows Froch Blueprint To Defeat Groves

Jamie Cox is following Carl Froch’s footsteps by using the same sparring partners Froch used to defeat George Groves, twice. Cox has retained the services of both Ricky Summers and Anthony Fowler in the build up to his clash with Groves at the Wembley Arena in London on Saturday, October 14.

Groves puts his WBA ‘Super’ super-middleweight title on the line in the World Boxing Super Series quarter final. The winner WILL face either Chris Eubank or Avni Yildirim in the last four.

“Froch used Ricky and Anthony as well before he fought Groves,” said John Costello, who trains Cox in the basement of a butcher’s shop in Birmingham in the west Midlands.

“They have the same speed and sharpness that Groves has and everyone Jamie spars says they can’t believe how strong he is.

“He is an animal and there’s no doubt in my mind Jamie will win.

“George has been doing a lot of talking – and that’s fine by us. We will do our talking on the night.”

Groves said he picked Cox as his quarter-final opponent “because he is the weakest.”

But Costello added: “The only reason Groves is fighting Jamie is because the money is better. We thought he would pick Skoglund, but he will make a lot more money for fighting Jamie and that’s why the fight is happening.

“Groves is in for a shock. He’s made a mistake.

“This fight is everything we wanted.

“We wanted to fight for a world title and we’ve wanted to fight George for a while.

“We asked for the fight a year or so ago and they turned it down. Now it’s happening, we couldn’t be happier.”
