Froch destroys Mack in double quick time, Bellew decisions Bolonti

Froch dominates Mack
Froch dominates Mack

By Danny Winterbottom: A thunderous left to the body of Yusef Mack at 2-30 of the third round saw Carl Froch make a successful first defence of the IBF super middleweight title he took from Lucien Bute in May in front of another sell out crowd at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham on Saturday Nov 17.

Froch (11st 13lbs 11oz) continued where he left off against Bute last time out as he quickly found his rhythm to drop Mack in the opener with a right hand. A stiff jab kept the Philly man honest at range before "The Cobra" stepped on the gas and landed punches in bunches to bamboozle the visitor.

Mack (12st) had brief success with a right hand of his own in the second but a chopping right after an exchange of punches from the champion had his legs wobbling again towards the end of the session.

Froch was able to walk through anything Mack had in his arsenal, and in the third and ultimately final round the champion landed clubbing blows inside. As the pair exchanged punches in the centre of the ring a thudding left hand sunk deep into the stomach of Mack and a follow up head shot dropped him to the canvas. It was immediately clear the Philly veteran was badly hurt from the body shot as he remained on all fours with referee Phil Edwards standing over him as he administered the 10 count.

Onwards and upwards for Froch and promoter Eddie Hearn expects a busy 2013 for the champion "The plan in 2013 is rematches with Bute, Kessler and Ward, preferably in Nottingham" he said.

In the chief support Liverpool’s Tony Bellew overcame a horrific cut above his right eyebrow to dominate a lacklustre Roberto Bolonti for the WBC silver light heavyweight title. The bout was also billed as an eliminator for Chad Dawson’s world title.

Bellew won with scores of 120-106 twice and 119-107.

The 29-year-old Scouser started the bout with mean intentions, dropping his man twice in the opening three rounds before Bolonti connected with one of the few punches he threw all night, causing a horrific cut above the right eyebrow of Bellew. As he did in the face of adversity against Ovil McKensie, Bellew got behind his jab and totally outboxed the Argentine for the rest of the contest. Bolonti will look back on the fight and ask himself why he didnt go for broke with Bellew handicapped by such a bad cut.
