Joe Gallagher, the trainer of WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith, believes that should his fighter pull of the shock of 2016 and defeat Mexican boxing legend Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on Saturday night, Undefeated former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr could come out of retirement and face fight him.
Smith, 23-0-1-(13), defends his title at the AT &T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday night and Gallagher believes an impressive showing against Alvarez, 47-1-1, could get him a dream title shot against ‘Money’ Mayweather.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Galleger said: "All we are thinking about is Saul Alvarez but if we pull this off on Saturday then for the next fight, I’d expect a call from Floyd Mayweather.
"Floyd will be sat there watching and think: ’There’s only two people who have beaten Alvarez. One’s me and one’s Liam Smith so I’ll give him a date for fight number fifty next year.
"If we win this, there’s a 90% chance that the phone will go from Team Mayweather.
"We don’t want to look ahead but it could be a life-changing fight for Smith.
"Liam is 36 minutes away from changing his life and becoming a superstar in world boxing."
Mayweather officially retired after defeating Andre Berto in September,2015 to equal Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 unbeaten record. A 50th fight for Mayweather could potentially mean one of the most financially lucrative fights in boxing histroy
