By Gabriel F. Cordero: Mexican two-division former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez is preparing intensely for his August 24 bout against WBC featherweight champion and compatriot Abner Mares at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Gonzalez trains daily at the Romanza Gym in Mexico City and on weekends travels to the Nevado de Toluca rising 15,354 above sea level, which is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Mexico City, near the city of Toluca.
“I’m training hard for this fight,” said Gonzalez. “This WBC featherweight belt was mine and I defended several times. I have to go through a lot of effort in order to become champion again.
“Abner Mares is a great champion but I’ve been a champion and it’ll be a great challenge. I’m going to go up to the ring that night as it was my first opportunity to fight for a world title and I’ll fight every minute of the fight as hard as possible,” stated Gonzalez.
