By Andy Rivera at ringside: Holly Holm captured the IBA/WBAN Jr. welterweight titles with an eighth round stoppage over game Ann Marie Saccurato at Route 66 Casino outside of Albuquerque, NM USA on Friday night.

Holm used her lightning fast combinations to keep the stalking Saccurato at arms length. Saccurato suffered a baseball sized lump on her forehead from a Holm left in round six which continued to get bigger until the fight was halted by referee Rocky Burke in the eighth round.

Holm fighting a smart fight from the offset, used her right hand jab and quick lefts to set the pace in the opening round. Saccurato kept coming forward attempting to get Holm into a brawl but Holm would stick to her game plan.

Rounds three and four saw Saccurato continue to press forward and doing some scoring on the inside to the body of Holm when the would get close, but other then that Holm was putting rounds in the bank.

Holm picked her pace up in round five landing more frequently, Saccurato looked to get more frustrated as the fight progressed with her not able to catch Holm other then one punch at a time.

In round six, Holm caught Saccurato with a hard right-left causing swelling on the forehead of Saccurato that swelled immediately to the size of baseball, it started to look like Hassim Rahman when he fought Evander Holyfield, to the point it looked like Saccurato was growing something out her head.

Holm dominated Saccurato in round seven landing harder shots with her being more aggressive as she went in for the kill. In the latter part of the round Holm landed two hard shots to the body that had Saccurato hurt and grimacing, she was able to last the round but you could see the end near.

Holm would finish Saccurato off in the eighth when she trapped Saccurato on the ropes and landed hard shots to the head of Saccurato that promoted referee Burke to halt the action giving Holm the stoppage victory.

In winning Holm raises her record to 29-1-3, while Saccurato falls to 15-6, Holm now will take some time off and decide what she would like to do next with mostly all major challengers been taken care of. Rumor has it she may take a shot at MMA in 2011.

In the best fight of the night Chevelle Hallback captured a split decision win over tough Victoria Cisneros, the fight had tons of action but wasn’t as close as the judges scored with Hallback landing the more crisper shots and making Cisneros miss most of hers.

Cisneros, who got on the boxing map last December when she got out of the stands to fight Holly Holm when Holm’s original opponent Melissa Hernandez backed out literally before the start.

Holm would go on to capture a unanimous decision, but Cisneros gave it her all, she had been promised another shot at Holm if she defeated Hallback, but Hallback would have something to say about that.

The fights pace was set early as Cisneros went right to Hallback trying to get Hallback into a war, which Hallback was happy to oblige, Cisneros although pressing the action, missed a lot with Hallback landing hard right hand leads and left hooks to Cisneros.

The fights pace continued much of the fight with both fighters landing shots but Hallback was more constant in her attack, to Cisneros credit she kept the pressure on Hallback but didn’t land as cleanly as Hallback.

Hallback landed a hard right hand in the middle of the fight that caused a large mouse under Cisneros right eye, although Cisneros corner claimed to have sustained the injury with a head butt , although it was evident that it was a punch from Hallback.

Hallback would get her 28th win against 6 loss, when the judges scored it a ridiculous 77-75 for Cisneros, while the other two had her winning at 78-72 and 77-75
Most media at ringside had it a lopsided win for Hallback. scored it 79-73.

Undercard action
Emmanuel Thompson made easy work of Christian Bruffy-Holmes with a quick first round knockout, dropping Bruffy-Holmes down with first hard right hand thrown, then finishing him off at :56 in Thompson’s pro debut.

Jodie Esquibel captured a unanimous decision over Savanna Hill in a women’s straw weight fight. Esquibel was too fast for the slower Hill, who had trouble catching up to the faster Esquibel.
All three judges scored it for Esquibel, who raises her record to 6-5-1, while Hill falls to 7-7.

Antonio Martinez of Espanola, NM defeated overmatched Michael Montalbano in the first round. Martinez stalked Montalbano from the get go, landing at will until Referee Richard Espinosa halted the action at 1:03 for Martinez capturing his pro debut win’ while Montalbano falls to 0-3.

Vincent Mirabel captured a unanimous decision over Joel Vargas, Mirabel was the faster and crisper over Vargas who only threw one punch at a time.
Mirabel remakes unbeaten at 7-0, while Vargas falls to 3-2.
