Ioka and Miyazaki both retain belts in Japan

Unbeaten Kazuto Ioka (12-0, 8 KOs) from Osaka, Japan, made a first defence of his WBA Light-Flyweight world championship in style by stopping the more experienced Wisanu Kokietgym (43-9-2, 11 KOs) of Thailand.

Ioka, just 24, is well known in Japan for unifying the WBC and WBA minimumweight titles after only 10 pro fights. In this, his maiden defence of the 108lb belt, he stopped the challenger, Kokletgym, with a body shot in round 9.

Chief support on the undercard came from fellow Osaka resident, Ryo Miyazaki (19-0-3, 11 KOs) who was defending Ioka’s old WBA title at 105lbs for the first time. Miyazaki dropped Mexican opponent Carlos Velarde (22-3-1, 13 KOs) in the 5th round prompting referee Raul Caiz Jr to stop the fight, awarding the home fighter a TKO victory.
