Jerry Glick reporting; Two former middleweight title challengers put on a rousing three round war with Brooklyn’s Daniel Jacobs prevailing in fine style after he and opponent Yovanny Lorenzo, 32, swung punches that had knockout intentions on everyone of them. Finally it was the younger man, Jacobs, 26, who landed the finisher in the third heat of ten scheduled
They call him the Miracle Man because he beat cancer, now after trading punches on a fairly even basis with Yovanny Lorenzo, 158 ½, for almost four rounds Daniel Jacobs pulled out another miracle of sorts, a powerful left hook/straight right combination that put Lorenzo down and out at 2:05 of the third round, capturing the vacant WBC Continental Americas Middleweight Title on Golden Boy’s show at the Best Buy Theater on Times Square, NY.
Referee Steve Willis started to count, but wisely thought better of it and halted the fight. Lorenzo, 158 ½, watched his record fall to 32-6 (24 KOs), as Jacobs, 159, improved to 26-1 (23 KOs).
Every time Eddie Gomez, 148, landed one of his many punches the crowd went wild. He just had too much fire power and threw too many punches for Steven Upsher Chambers, 147, hurting him in the opening frame. After Gomez landed hard combinations to the head and body including a left hook that hurt Chambers referee Steve Smoger called it off at 2:33 of the fourth frame.
Chambers fought defensively with his gloves up blocking punches to his face, some of Gomez’ punches were blocked but most of the time he managed to break through Chambers’ defense. Gomez, improved to 15-0 (10 KOs), while Chamber dropped to 24-3-1 (6 KOs).
Terrell Gausha, 159 ½, landed a left hook/right combination two times right to the head at the bell that had Austin Marcum, 160, draped on the ropes unconscious, referee Benji Estevez counted until he stood erect.. In the second Gausha, 10-2 (4 KOs), attacked with punches from all angles, jabs, uppercuts, dropping him in a corner to be stopped at 1:04 by referee Benji Estavez. Marcum fell to 5-4 (3 KOs).
Kamal Muhammad, 148, dropped Gary Beriguette, 149, in the first round only to go down in the second and suffer a bloody cut to the scalp from a butt. Beriguette who had a nasty cut over the right eye outworked Muhammad and went on to win the decision by scores of 39-36 twice, and 38-36. Beriguette is now 2-0 (1 KO), and Muhammad dropped to 0-2.
One big right uppercut by popular, southpaw Marcus Browne, 176, to the head of Robert Hill. 174, and that was all it took. Hill went down for the count. Time :59 of round one. Brown moves to 6-0 (6 KOs), and Hill is now 1-2 (0 KOs).
Emmanuel Gonzalez, 12-0 (7 KOs), used his height to his advantage. He backed opponent Michael Doyle, 2-4 (1 KO), up for the entire four rounds using his jab followed by a long, accurate right to the head. All three Judges scored it 40-36 for the still unbeaten Gonzalez.
