James Halts Chaves in Three

By Derek Bonnett

The comeback of exciting Argentine welterweight Diego Gabriel Chaves came to a screeching halt at the Pioneer Events Center in Lancaster, California on Fox Deportes.

Chaves, 31, rode a three bout win-streak since receiving a controversial twelve round draw against Timothy Bradley in 2014 coming into his bout with Jamal James. James enjoyed a five inch height advantage, but was outboxed by Chaves in the first round as the Argentine puncher used a stiff jab to move the American backward. Chaves leaped in with some wild hooks, but was never able to hurt James in spite of the fast start. James moved better in round two and used his own jab to come forward. Chaves began to back up more and more as James used his height to gain leverage on his punches. In round three, James backed Chaves to the ropes and unleashed a barrage of punches on the Argentine fighter, who crouched over to avoid or block most of the punches. However, a digging left uppercut to the body crippled Chaves and brought him to the canvas where he was counted out at the 2:12 mark

James, 29, raised his record to 22-1-0 (10) witht he career best win. Chaves sunk to 26-3-1 (22).
