Former world light welterweight champion Amir Khan is hoping to convince American based IBF welterweight champ Devon Alexander to defend his title against him in Dubai on December 7. Traditionally it would be common place for such a high profile fight to take place in a major fight city like New York or Las Vegas but Khan believes he may just have convinced Alexander to travel to Dubai to defend his title.

Khan, the former WBA and IBF light-welterweight champion told The Sun newspaper “We discussed Dubai and put it on the table as my preferred option to Devon.

"He wasn’t sure at first and suggested we fight in Vegas.

“But negotiations are going on right now. My dad and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy are talking to the right people in Dubai.”

Khan added: “There is a big opportunity for Dubai to attract big names in boxing like Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, myself and many others.

“The sport is loved there but I don’t think they have had an opportunity before to put big fights on.”

The oil rich Dubai is keen to establish itself as a major destination for high profile sports events having staged Formula one races and major Golf tournaments. Boxing is becoming very popular in the Middle East so it makes sense to try and establish the sport there.
