Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: Ronson Frank’s Uprising Promotions returned to Five Star Banquet Hall in Long Island City, NY with another hot show. This one was headlined by a lady’s NYS Heavyweight title battle, and the co-feature included one of the more popular local fighters.
Sonya “The Scholar” Lamonakis, 229. 8, went eight hard fought rounds with former three time foe Tiffany Woodard for the New York State heavyweight belt. Lamonakis made it an inside fight and maintained control to take a unanimous decision and along with the “W” she took home the vacant New York State Lady’s Heavyweight title.
Lamonakis bulled her way inside to slam lefts and rights to the body. She kept the fight on the ropes as often as she could and that was very often. Woodard, 184.8, absorbed a lot of punches but never stopped trying. Lamonakis took a few too when her taller but lighter opponent found the room to let her hands go. It was a pier six from the get go. Lamonakis is now 9-1-2 (1 KO) and 3-0-1 against Woodard who fell to 4-8-3 (3 KOs). Steve Willis refereed.
