Lebedev Returns To Hospital

Just days after losing his WBA cruiserweight title Denis Lebedev is back in hospital for treatment to the injuries he suffered after losing his title to Guillermo Jones in Moscow last Friday night.

The Russian boxer’s manager Vlad Hrunov broke the news to R-Sport on Monday.

Lebedev lost his title via 11th round technical knockout when he was knocked down and the referee ruled he was in no condition to continue.

Jones opened up a gash around Lebedev’s eye in the opening round and it swelled up very quickly, forcing the eventual hospital admission after the fight. Hrunov had originally said that Lebedev had been discharged on Saturday.

“He’s in the hospital right now. He doesn’t have big problems,” Hrunov said, adding Lebedev was undergoing a brain scan. When asked for further information the manager said that there was “nothing” of concern to worry about.

At the post fight press conference Jones’ promoter, the ever vocal Don King argued that Lebedev’s doping test should be void because the pair did not take their tests together.

Hrunov countered by insisting that King had insisted on conditions not present in the contract on doping tests between the two fighters’ camps, but had “finally” agreed the tests were valid.

“Don King proposed himself some procedure, so we had a strong conversation. I presented a strong position because I am right,” Hrunov said.

There were rumours that the Panamanian boxer refused to take a drug test but those rumours were unfounded and the tests will be available this coming Wednesday.
