Irish middleweight contender, Andy Lee, 30-2-(21), returned to the United States on Wednesday evening to make a statement at BB King Blues Club, NYC in the latest edition of DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing Series.
Lee’s opponent in the headlining bout of an entertaining 8 fight card was the tough and durable southpaw Daryl Cunningham (28W-4L, 11KO’s) from Detroit.
The opening round seen Lee using an effective crisp right jab before landing a thundering left hook followed by a stiff right hand to wobble Cunningham’s legs. Sensing blood the Irishman unleashed a barrage of punches trapping his opponent on the ropes before referee Benjy Esteves stopped the fight to save Cunningham from further punishment at the official time of 1.27.
This was Lee’s second win this year and he aims to stay busy to progress his ambition for a 2nd world title bid. These fights are important stepping stones and increments to re-building a fighter’s career and positioning him for a world title down the track.
Lee relocated his training base to London last Autumn to be trained by the astute and world class trainer, Adam Booth. The Irishman is making adjustments to his game which was evident as he stalked Cunningham round the ring with menacing vigour and intent.
Lee over the last few years has kept a close eye on the championship reign of middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez. Lee now sets his sights on challenging Martinez for the WBC middleweight when the Argentinian recovers from injury.
"I feel like I am at the top of my game right now and obviously the number one guy in the middleweight division is Sergio Martinez and that is the fight I want. We have the same promoter in Lou DiBella, so I feel like it is an easy fight to make and one that is very attractive for the middleweight division. I know that Sergio is taking some time off, but I’ll be ready for him once he is ready to go" commented Lee.
An encounter between Lee and Martinez is a fight the Irish boxing fans in New York and Ireland would relish.
Can Lee succeed were Pavlik, Williams, Dzinziruk, Chavez Jr., Barker, Macklin and Murray failed? Patience is a virtue and Team Lee believe good things come to he who waits and given the opportunity Andy Lee can end Sergio Martinez reign as champion.
