Former world champion and local hero, Juan Manuel Lopez returned to winning ways in his native Puerto Rico on Saturday (March 15) night.
Lopez, was facing previous opponent Daniel Ponce De Leon in a rematch of their 2008 clash. In that fight Lopez blitzed the Mexican in a round.
After an relatively calm opener, both men were down in the second with De Leon dropping Lopez initially then the local man dropping him back twice. Following the second De Leon knockdown referee Luis Pabon halted the contest much to the dismay of De Leon who looked clear headed and in a position to continue.
Lopez improves to 34-3-0 with 31 KO’s and captures the WBO International Super Featherweight title. De Leon drops to 45-6-0 with 35 KO’s and will face a long road back to title contention.
Big punching Daniel Jacobs scored a quick 1st round KO Milton “El Misil” Nunez, dropping his opponent 3 times before the fight was waved off with just 35 seconds remaining in the 1st. Jacobs record now stands at an impressive 27-1, 24 KOs with his sole loss against Dmitry Pirog almost 4 years ago.
