Malignaggi and Broner Duel of Words

Jerry Glick reporting: Can’t be sure whether I attended a boxing press conference or the Jerry Springer Show. After they taunted each other about the lovely Jessica, WBA World Welterweight Champion Paulie Malignaggi’s ex, they posed for the photographers, and it was expected that he and challenger, WBC Lightweight Champion Adrien Broner would talk to the writers but only Broner stayed for a short time, an obviously angry Malignaggi bolted immediately.

The Golden Boy promoted fight will take place on Saturday at Brooklyn’s Barclays Centre. It heads up a ten fight show that begins at a very early 4:30, with ShowTime kicking in at 9PM.

That Broner brought Jessica to the press conference was probably to get under the Brooklyn Italian’s skin and if that was his motive, he succeeded. An enraged Malignaggi promised to give his challenger a beating.

Both men appeared to be acting like bottom feeders with this young lady’s reputation at stake. If the fighters hug at the end of the fight it would be something to see.

One interesting point that Malignaggi made was Broner’s admiration for Floyd Mayweather whose style he has used with success. Malignaggi dared him to develop his own character, “You even talk like Floyd,” said Paulie.

With Broner’s people referring to the Champion as “Paulette,” Malignaggi said that Broner’s name, Adrien, is the effeminate one.

Hard to pick a winner of the verbal war, it is easier to predict a brutal battle when they fight with their fists.

One topic that was barely touched upon was the fight. These guys really don’t like each other, so personalities were more on their minds than winning.

To his credit, Golden Boy’s CEO Richard Schaefer started things off by requesting that the topic remain boxing, not relationships with women, but apparently neither man had any intention of listening to his advice.

The winner will be the man who is best able to impose his will on the other. Light hitting Malignaggi needs to prove that he is faster and possesses the better skills, while the harder hitting Broner must be able to hurt Malignaggi.
