Margarito Could be Next For Cotto as Mayorga Retires

Miguel Cotto’s reward for taming the profanity spouting Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night could be a rematch with bitter rival Antonio Margarito. And whilst Cotto dreams of avenging Margarito for the now infamous hand wrap scandal in 2008, it looks like the 12th round battering Mayorga took has sent him into retirement.

Cotto is desperate to rematch Margarito, who just happened appear at the post fight press conference and was asked to step up to the podium by promoter Bob Arum. Margarito offered his hand to Cotto, who immediately turned his back on the Mexican.

Margarito explained that he was there to enjoy the fight but if the opportunity arose he would be happy to face Cotto again, probably in July.

Arum, never one to miss an opportunity, said: “We have to negotiate details,” indicating that preliminary negotiations may already be in full flow.
