Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: Boyd Melson, 156, and Jason Thompson, 153, decided to reprise their historic first fight that ended in a draw in the very first ever fight at the brand new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, back on October 20th of 2012.
They fought the rematch on DiBella Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series, co-promoted with 50 Cent’s SMS Promotions, at BB Kings in Times Square on Wednesday August 14th with Melson outworking Thompson, 5-7-3 (4 KOs), decking him in the eighth and final round to cop a unanimous decision by scores of 78-73 twice, and 77-74. Melson (4 KOs), 12-1-1 suffered a bloody cut over his right eye in the sixth frame. Referee Gonzalez asked for the ring doctor’s opinion of the cut and the fight continued.
Tor Hamer, 225, won a wild one over bullish Kertson Manswell, 280, who constantly rushed in like a linebacker wrestling them both to the canvas more than once. Half way through the round Hamer decked him with a right. Up and looking unhurt, Manswell proceeded to continue his rough house ways.
Finally Hamer, 21-2 (14 KOs) landed a barrage of punches that laid Manswell, 23-8 (17 KOs), out. Manswell claimed he was fouled and remained on the floor. Referee Eddie Claudio told NYSAC as Manswell lay nearby, “I don’t buy it. It’s a TKO at three minutes of the first round.”
Donte Strayhorn, 139 ½,put up with the constant bull rushes from, Justin Robbins, 138, to land his straight shots onto the oncoming target. Robbins, 1-3 (0 KOs), tried to make it a pier six but Strayhorn, 3-1 (0 KOs), never lost his poise and took home the unanimous win. 40-36 from all three Judges.
In a shocker Neuky Santelises, 130, was dispatched in only 1:19 of round one after absorbing a single left hook from journeyman Michael Doyle 131. Santelises, 5-1 (4 KOs), got to his feet but referee Ricky Gonzalez decided that he wasn’t in good enough shape to continue and stopped the fight. Doyle picks up his first KO and second win. He is now 2-3 (1 KO).
Sonya Lamonakis, 216, kept her hands churning out punches while heavier opponent, Tanzee Daniel, 240, fought mostly with her hands down at her side and back leaning on the ropes allowing Lamonakis to keep her pinned as she threw mostly arm punches that, nevertheless were landing and impressing the Judges. Lamonikis, 8-1-2 (1 KO), wins unanimously with scores of 60-54 twice and 59-55. Daniel falls to 4-3-1 (1 KO). Claudio refereed.
Former amateur star, Patrick Day, 154, dominated Donald Ward, 150, using his faster hands and longer reach to pile up the points. Day, 5-0 (2 KOs) hurt Ward, 5-2 (3 KOs) in the first of six rounds with a hard right, but Ward recovered only to get hit with another later in the same frame. The rounds were all similar with Ward doing his best to avoid Day’s quick combos and and effective counter-punching. Day win a unanimous six by taking a 60-54 from the three Judges. Santiago refereed.
Lennox Allen, 169, landed the cleaner punches on awkward Michael Gbenga, 170, to take a lopsided unanimous decision by scores of 60-54 and 59-55 two times. Gbenga continually rushed in throwing punches from all angles, but missed most of them. Allen improved to 17-0-1 (10 KOs), and Gbenga saw his record fall to 16-9 (16 KOs). Ricky Gonzalez refereed.
Amos Cowart, 135 ½, drew with Chazz McDowell, 137. He had to chase McDowell down for the entire six rounds but McDowell was landing too.. By the third McDowell was in full retreat but still managed to land effectively. In the fourth frame he stopped running long enough to land his best punches of the night, a combination to Cowart’s head and body. Cowart stayed in pursuit and also landed some punches that appeared to be cleaner but the Judges scored it 58-56 for Cowart ant 57-57, even, twice for a majority draw. A rematch will happen on September 16th. Eddie Claudio refereed.
Debuting Jeremy Abram, 128, did not give up his height as he boxed behind a long, straight left jab to take a unanimous decision by a score of 40-36 over Micah Branch, also 128. Abram is now 1-0 and Branch falls to 1-8-1 (0 KOs). Pete Santiago refereed.
