Argenis “La Tormenta” Mendez, 22-1-1-(11), retained his IBF super featherweight title after battling to a majority draw over 12 rounds against Usmanee, 20-1-1-(10), at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York on Friday.
Usmanee was the aggressor for most of the fight but Mendez’s sharper boxing skills ensured he nicked a close decision on one judges card by a score 115-113 while the other two officials made the fight even at 114-114 apiece.
On the undercard in a bout for the WBA interim featherweight crown, Jesus Cuellar, 23-1-(18), scored a 12 round unanimous decision win over previously unbeaten Claudio “The Matrix” Marrero,14-1-(11). In an entertaining fight which saw both enjoy great success, it Cuellar who caught the judges eye by being slightly busier. He also scored a knockdown in round six Marrero wobbled Cuellar in round seven but it was not enough to sway the judges who scored the bout 115-112, 114-113, 116-111 for Cuellar.
In other action Ed “The Lion” Paredes scored a unanimous 10-round decision over Noe Bolanos from Mexico. The scores were 99-91 by all three judges.
In a super featherweight bout Alexei Collado scored a fifth round tko win over Guillermo Sanchez . Collado out hustled Sanchez in every round before forcing a stoppage after 2:25 of the fifth session.
Up at Heavyweight Dorsett Barnwell of Newport News, VA had scored a routine stoppage win over 42 year -Marlon Hayes of Newark, NJ. Barnwell took out Hayes after 2:14 of round three. Barnwell improves to 10-0-(5), while Hayes drops 23-13.
Former undisputed world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson made his debut as a promoter.
