Munguia Defeats Ali By TKO/Vargas Retains Title Against Hovhannisyan

By: Ron Valderrama: In his first title defense, Sadam Ali (26-2, 14 KOs), lost his WBO Super Welterweight Title against a larger Jaime Munguia (29-0, 25 KOs), Saturday night at the Turning Stone Resort in Verona, New York.

It was clear from the first bell that the size of Munguia was going to be an issue for Ali, as Munguia pelted Ali like a piñata at a birthday party. It was just last December that Sadam Ali defeated Miguel Cotto, capturing the WBO title. Ali is a legit fighter but was clearly hurt early as Munguia delivered crushing blows in round 1, dropping Ali twice for a count. Jaime Munguia continued punishing Ali in round 2, landing punches at will and again dropping Ali for a count. Before the start of the round 4, the referee could have stopped the fight, but the doctor allowed the fight to continue. The end would come soon for Ali, as Munguia landed a hard-left hook that sent Ali down for a final time as the referee wisely stopped the fight. Official time of stoppage was 1:02 of round 4 in favor of Jaime Munguia by TKO.

Rey Vargas (32-0, 22 KOs) retained his WBC Super Bantamweight Title, defeating Azat Hovhannisyan (14-3, 11 KOs) in the co-main event of the evening. The awkward style of Hovhannisyan made the fight entertaining to say the least. A cut opened on the left eye of Vargas in the round 1 but did not appear to be a factor the entire fight, despite a steady flow of blood. Both fighters were exchanging heavy blows, but Vargas was clearly landing cleaner and precise shots on Hovhannisyan. The fight would go the distance, the judges score the bout 118-110; 117-111 and 116-112 in favor of Rey Vargas.
