WBA minimumweight world champion Yutaka Niida retained his title with a 6th round knockout of Jose Luis Varela on Saturday night at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan, promoted by Teiken Promotions in association with Yokohama Hikari Promotions.

“I know my real power has increased through six defenses,” said Niida, “and I wished to show it to the crowd. If the mandatory defense with unbeaten Roman Gonzalez is decided, I welcome it and am confident to beat him.”

29 year-old Niida 23-1-3 (9), a two-time world champion, made the seventh defence of his WBA belt, stopping the 29 year-old Venezuelan with a series of body shots. Referee Raul Caiz counted Varela 15-4 (7) out, who was lying in pain on the canvas.

The judges had Niida ahead, 50-44, 49-45 and 49-45 at the time of the stoppage.
