On the Move: SecondsOut World Rankings 10/20/13

By Derek Bonnett: Ruslan Provodnikov is a crude fighter when compared to numerous other top boxers in and around his division. He does not have the speed, hand skills, defense, or ring generalship possessed by a Danny Garcia, Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, or Floyd Mayweather Jr. Provodnikov does, however, possess certain abilities and intangibles which can level the playing field against more talented fighters. We saw this against Timothy Bradley most clearly, who barely nipped a decision over the Siberian Rocky and currently stands prominently on most Pound for Pound lists (accurately or not). Last night, we again saw Provodnikov’s will, chin, power, and relentless attack level the playing field with a more talented boxer. This time, he prevailed. Provodnikov’s reign will be short. I think we can bank on that. However, every minute will be worth our time. This man just might be forging future Legendary Nights from now on.

On Saturday, October 19, at Messehalle, Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany, Robert Stieglitz defeated Isaac Ekpo in a twelve round WBO super middleweight title bout. Stieglitz prevailed by scores of 119-109 and 118-110 twice. Stieglitz marked the second defense of his second reign at WBO champion. The champion raised his ledger to 46-3 (26). Ekpo fell to 22-2 (16).

Stieglitz remained SecondsOut’s number three ranked super middleweight.

At Arena Roberto Duran, Panama City, Panama, Luis Concepcion stopped Carlos Ruben Dario Ruiz in ten rounds of a flyweight bout. The time of the stoppage was 2:00 of the tenth round. Concepcion raised his dossier to 30-3 (22). Ruiz fell to 17-3 (10).

Concepcion retained his number eight ranking among SecondsOut’s top 112-pounders.

At Odyssey Arena, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, Carl Frampton stopped Jeremy Parodi in six rounds of a super bantamweight bout. A body shot ended the fight at the 2:59 mark. Frampton advanced his record to 17-0 (12). Parodi fell to 35-2-1 (9).

Frampton held onto his number five SecondsOut ranking at super bantamweight.

At 1st Bank Center, Denver, Colorado, USA, Mike Alvarado retired in his corner for round ten against Ruslan Provodnikov in a WBO light welterweight title bout. Provodnikov dropped Alvarado twice in round number eight and had him badly hurt at the fight’s conclusion. Alvarado, making his first defense of his title at home, fell to 34-2 (23). Provodnikov scored his career best win and advanced to 23-2 (16).

Provodnikov jumped from fifth to third in the SecondsOut 140 pound rankings. Alvarado fell from third to fourth. Brandon Rios and Zab Judah were dropped from the 140 rankings at SecondsOut to campaign at 147, where they remain unranked. The previous six through nine contenders each climbed one ranking. Mauricio Herrera climbed back into the SecondsOut rankings at number nine. Viktor Postol entered the SecondsOut rankings at number ten.

Also on the move, Juan Diaz re-entered the SecondsOut lightweight rankings after a long hiatus. The Baby Bull climbed back in at the ten spot. Paulus Moses exited to make room.
