Oscar Valdez Retains Title, Attends Hospital With Suspected Broken Jaw

WBO featherweight champ Oscar Valdez, 24-0-(19), retained his title via 12 round unanimous decision in a real war against British challenger Scott Quigg at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on Saturday night.

Valdez emerged victorious with a 117-111,117-111 and 118-110 points win on the judges cards. Valdez went after Quigg from the opening bell, landing some big punches but Quigg returned the firepower in the second session and the two traded openly to the delight of the crowd.

Valdez worked on the inside in the third session, working Quigg’s body with the left hook. Quigg suffered a cut left eye in the fifth round but stayed with Valdez and connected a big right hand to stop the champion in his tracks, for a moment at least.

By the eighth round both fighters were showing the scars of battle and bleeding, Quigg from the cut eye and Valdez from the mouth. The championship rounds saw both trading freely as the battle intensified. Valdez landed the better combinations to claim the decision but Quigg’s pressure throughout the fight contributed to an entertaining contest

Quigg failed to make the contracted weight of 126lbs at Friday’s weigh in but Valdez still had to win to retain his title.

Valdez went to hospital after the fight with a suspected broken jaw and did not attend the post fight press conference
