Jerry Glick reporting: On April 19th at the DC Armory in Washington, DC, Paul Malignaggi will challenge 26 year old, undefeated, 23-0-1 (14 KOs), IBF Welterweight Champion, Shawn Porter for his title. The 33 year old Malignaggi will be shooting for his third world title. According to his highly regarded manager/advisor, Anthony Catanzaro, Malignaggi, 33-5 (7 KOs), will be ready.
"We had a big win over (Zab) Judah," explained Catanzaro. "And that put Paulie in the mix for a big fight. "
They waited for the right opportunity and it will happen on a big Golden Boy show. "This opportunity came to fruition against Shawn Porter; a champion without much experience at the top level which will favor Paulie," added Catanzaro. "But Porter is a hungry, physical kid who throws lots of punches. Paulie will work the jab, use his speed of foot and hand, use his big fight experience which should lead to a successful night on the undercard of Hopkins-Shumenov."
The former junior welterweight and welterweight champ from Brooklyn, NY, is very excited that this chance to be a champion again has arrived.
"To arrange the fight we had to wait for the IBF to grant an exemption for the manditory defense against Kell Brook," said Catanzaro. "That’s how we arranged this fight."
Malignaggi’s team is clearly a pro active bunch, grabbing the opportunity away from the manditory. "We are excited about the opportunity for Paulie to win his third world title," Catanzaro enthused. "But we know that Porter will not hand us the belt."
