Perez Edges Out Forbes

Johan “El Terrible” Perez, 16- 1-1-(12), of Venezuela scored a majority 10 round decision win against former IBF super featherweight champ Stevie Forbes,35-12-(11), at the BB& T Center in Sunrise, Florida on Saturday evening.


Forbes, the former IBF super featherweight champion, caught Perez early with a series of counter left hooks that caused a swelling around the right eye of Perez . Perez was the aggressor and bigger fighter of the two but Forbes is a slick boxer and picked his punches wisely. Perez did have his moments early on with some crisp right hands but Forbes absorbed the majority of blows on his gloves before countering the former WBA 140lbs interim champ. .


Forbes scored big in the sixth round with some heavy overhand right hands but Perez kept coming forward with some heavy handed punches of his own in the seventh round. In the tenth and final round, Forbes was cut around right eye as he tried to finish the fight strongly in a bid to impress the. Judges. But it was not to be as two officials made Perez a close winner by scores of 97-93, 96-94 while the third judge saw the fight even at 95-95.


On the undercard 2012 US Olympic middleweight Terrell Gausha, 2-0-(2), of Cleveland took out Kenneth Taylor Schmitz, 2-6-(1), of San Diego after 1.42 of the first round. A combination of left hooks did the damage.


light heavyweight prospect Thomas Williams, 12-0(9), of Maryland stopped opponent Jason Smith (8-2, 6 KOs), after 1.56 of the third round in their co-main event televised by Fox Sports.
