SecondsOut Awards:Trainer Of The Year,Abel  Sanchez

By Andy Rivera: This year’s SecondsOut Trainer of the Year Abel Sanchez edged out last year’s Anatoly Lomechenko, who trains his son Vasyl Lomachenko by one vote, although many might feel that Vasyl was more impressive in 2017, this award is for the trainers not the fighter. Sanchez of course trains Gennady Golovkin aka GGG but he also has helped Light-heavyweight contender Sullivan Barrera rejuvenate his career.

Sanchez helped guide GGG to the pound for pound top on many publications lists. Taking Golovkin’s European style and intertwining his Mexican style together.

Golovkin and Sanchez had to adjust in early 2017, when GGG fought the tough Daniel Jacobs who fought maybe the fight of his life in taking GGG to the limit and halting Golovkin’S knockout streak. Sanchez had to make adjustments when Golovkin couldn’t halt Jacobs as he had before, although GGG stated he wasn’t too excited in the Jacobs fight with the ‘Canelo’ Alvarez fight looming, but he came out victorious.

In the 2017 mega fight with ‘Canel’, Sanchez helped Golovkin to what many felt was a victory over although ending in a disputed draw. The two should be ready to go at in May, 2018, the only adjustment Sanchez may have Golovkin do is cut the ring off when ‘Canelo’ gets on his bicycle.

Sullivan Barrera lost to linear light-heavyweight champion Andrew Ward in 2016, Sanchez then helped rejuvenate Barrera’s career with four straight wins, three in 2017 including wins over Bernard Hopkins conqueror Joe Smith and then capturing another unanimous decision over tough up and comer Felix Valera.

Barrera is now in positron to fight WBA champion Dmitry Bivol in March 2018.

The work Sanchez has done with both GGG and Barrera in 2017, the two are in position for major fights in 2018, Sanchez is finally getting his due recognition as secondsOut’s 2017 fighter of the year.
