This week SecondsOut’s big fight prediction is the WBO super bantamweight clash between champion Nonito Donaire and former world champion Jorge Arce. The pair clash at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas and for the second week in a row a Filipino a Mexican face each other in battle.
See below who our army of writers think will be victorious this weekend.
I see this fight as a very evenly and exciting match up early on with Arce giving Donaire all the trouble he can handle but as Donaire finds his range I see him slowly breaking Arce down, cutting him up and stopping around the midway point

Donaire will be too strong for Arce, it will be a war while it lasts but ultimately Donaire will prevail

Nonito Donaire has elevated himself as one of the sport’s lb for lb best. His knockout of Montiel was spectacular and that fight alone has many fans willing and ready to watch him. His last four fights weren’t the best to watch, but this one should be exciting. Jorge Arce continues to fight like a warrior. His style is made for Donaire. I think the fight goes to the middle rounds, with Donaire finishing off Arce in a fight he’s comfortably winning.

Following Jorge Arce’s fights has been a true pleasure since I first took note of him back in 1999, after he lost by eleventh round KO to a rallying Michael Carbajal. Notching wins over Yo-Sam Choi, Melchor Cob Castro, Joma Gamboa, and Rosendo Alvarez established Arce as a world class champion with a solid prime. It all seemed to crash down after 2009 losses to Vic Darchinyan and Simphiwe Nongqayi, but Arce remained relevant and then pulled off a nice upset win over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in 2011. That win set Arce on a trek to avenge a couple previous blemishes and into a showdown with pound for pound elite Nonito Donaire. Donaire is the star here and is eyeing a solid 2012 finish as Fighter of the Year if he can post his fourth win of the year against the aged Arce. The Mexican showman has been all heart since he laced up the gloves, but in a recent bout with Jesus Rojas, we saw Arce willingly not continue for the first time in his career after he was accidentally fouled. The fight had only just begun and even though Arce had dropped his man, he seemed not to like the direction the tide had shifted in the second. Donaire on the other hand has become boxing’s most under appreciated top talent. He’s been making top fighters look average and dropping naturally bigger men as he’s climbed the weight division ladder. In Arce, he’ll be meeting a fading fighter, who has stretched himself even further across the lighter weight divisions. Don’t expect the typical Arce drama. This one is going to most resemble his loss to Darchinyan. Donaire will find a home for his right hand with laser-like focus. Don’t be surprised if his left hook shows up as well. Arce’s last hurrah won’t be pretty.
Donaire KO 5.
Arce has been a great action fighter for years but he’s been in so many wars and is so prone to cuts I can’t see this going very long. Also, his straight forward attack plays right into Donaire’s hands. Arce will hang tough and make it exciting until Donaire either cuts him to ribbons or a lands a big left hook to end it.

This one could go either way because both can win, and it may come down to youth over age. That’s the way I see it, Donaire will stop Arce probably on a bad cut around the eighth round.

There won’t be any whistling during this one! Jorge Arce’s 57th fight as a professional was a grudge match against south-paw, Vic Darchinyan. While watching that fight it seemed as if it was the first time Arce was ever in the ring with a lefty; and Darchinyan isn’t exactly known for disguising his punch output. Three years have passed, and Arce has gone on a nice run, but it will end on Saturday Night. Donaire is as technically sound as any fighter in the game, and the only thing that has hurt him is finding opponents willing to trade with him. Saturday should be a win-win for Donaire, as Arce has no doubt prepared to win. However, when he decides to stand in front of Donaire, he’ll be hit with punches he’s never seen in the ring. Arce will be willing to go out on his shield, but my guess is that his corner prevents him from doing so.

Nonito Donaire is young, accurate, powerful and loves to knock people out. Jorge Arce is a tremendous fighter but he is getting older and has always been findable. Take those intangibles and factor in that Donaire is one of the best pound for pound fighters on the planet and this has the makings of an early night.

The WBO super bantamweight title is on the line as Nonito Donaire and Jorge Arce do battle in Houston. It will be a test for both fighters, Donaire seems to win with a comfortable margin when his fights go the distance, but he will be facing a veteran fighter with legit resume. Donaire will have to be more aggressive when taking on Arce, he will have to fight him inside and use his jab when on the outside. Arce is a crafty veteran who always comes to fight, he has been fighting for 16 years and is past his prime. The problem is someone forgot to let him know this, the Mexican favorite has been a beast since moving from a super flyweight to super bantamweight. Arce may not have the speed or power he once had, but he has a chin and has proved this time and time again. Arce will have to go straight at Donaire and cut off the ring, Donaire is a master at using the ring and has great movement. If Arce can remove this element and use his experience, then button up your overcoat buttercup, we have a fight on our hands. I see the fight going into the later rounds however, each fighter will suffer a knockdown and both will be tested. Donaire will dominate with speed and power, wearing Arce down with a barrage of punches throughout the fight, scoring a TKO somewhere in rounds 9-12.
Donaire wins by tko round 9-12.
Many believe this is going to be the biggest mismatch of the year, but Arce has a lot of energy, can slug even very strong opponents alright and should in this fight, this is probably his chance. Arce 12SD

I like Donaire big. Arce has always been one of the most entertaining fighters throughout his career, but his time has come and gone. I see this more as a showcase fight for Donaire than anything else. If Arce comes hard, it could be one hell of a fight, but I honestly think the Filipino blows his doors off. I see Donaire scoring a 3rd round KO.

"That was great while it lasted", hopefully will said by no one once the fight between these two greats is history. Over the past 10-plus years, Jorge "El Travieso" Arce has effectively embodied all the traits of the classic Mexican boxing warrior. He has to really be put down and away in order to be defeated. This fight could get ugly, but in a good way. Each fighter has remained active in 2012, as this is the fourth fight of the year for each athlete, respectively. Nonito "Filipino Flash" Donaire seems to have comfortably taken a space in the super bantamweight division. He’ll have an inch advantage in height as well as the upper in hand by two inches in reach. He should be able to use his jab effectively and hopefully he will not experiment in any round with a southpaw stance. Donaire may be able to easily counter Arce’s tendencies to charge inward. Nonito’s powerful hook could be the difference. He needs to stay off of the ropes. The fight shouldn’t start with fireworks, but rounds four through perhaps six or seven should give us just that. However, Donaire’s power and pressure will prove to be too much for Arce to handle. I predict a late stoppage via cuts or a TKO win late for Donaire.
Donaire late Stoppage via cuts or tko
