SecondsOut Team Picks: Malignaggi Vs Broner

This week’s big fight prediction from SecondsOut’s army or writers the WBA light welterweight title fight between champion Paulie Malignaggi and unbeaten challenger Adrien Broner from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night.

See below who our army of correspondents think will be victorious

When this fight was announced it screamed Broner TKO, and the thought remains now. I can’t see how Malignaggi keeps off Broner and it is only a matter of time before Paulie’s boxing skills start to falter in the face of his opponents accuracy and spite. I see that happening around round 8.

After picking himself up off the canvas to secure a close decision over Pablo Cesar Cano, Paulie Malignaggi felt he was above a title defense against Shane Mosley. Mosley settled for facing and defeating Cano in Cancun on April 20, and Malignaggi opted to take on lightweight titlist, Adrien Broner. Malignaggi is a very good boxer, and no one could question his toughness; however, he will regret this business decision mid-way through the fight on Saturday night. Broner is a fighter on the rise. With the best at junior welterweight being occupied, he decided to move up and cherry-pick a welterweight title. Malignaggi will have a size advantage, but he has always been a guy that needed to rely on his quickness and boxing skills. At this point in his career, those are two advantages he won’t have against the younger, fresher, and faster Broner. I believe Broner will find his range in the middle rounds, and when he hurts Malignaggi, he will pump the gas and go for the stoppage. He will then tell Jim Gray that even Showtime Announcers - "Can Get It".

I want to believe in Paulie Malignaggi in this fight for a bunch of reasons. Firstly, he’s earned his stripes the hard way and secondly he is such a likeable personality. Still, I’m getting constant flashbacks of his huge confidence levels prior to the Hatton and Khan fights and he was dominated on both occasions. Will things really be different this time? Broner may not be as big as Hatton or Khan but he looks to be more talented and he is an extremely sharp technician. Broner obviously feels that this is a safe route to a welterweight title because Paulie can’t hurt him and I think he is a very shrewd businessman. If a 6ft tall power puncher held the WBA crown then Broner wouldn’t be going anywhere near 147lbs. I think “The Problem” outsmarts “The Magic Man” inside the distance and turns in a brutal performance.

Malignaggi showed what he can do against a really good fighter in the Cotto and Khan fights. Mobile enough to make a good contest of it, but can’t beat Broner; tko, late.

I’m still not completely sold on Broner, possibly because of the level of opposition he’s faced. If he’s the real deal this fight will mark the beginning of bigger and better things for him because, despite being feather-fisted, Malignaggi is a seasoned, savvy veteran with a good jab. His legs may be a bit suspect but I still think he will give Broner problems early and hang tough until the end. Broner by decision.

Adrien Broner is making a clever move by challenging Malignaggi for his 147-lb title. The Cincinnati native has exceptional ability rivaled by very few and has shown signs of greatness. Paulie Malignaggi overachieved in his career and deserves credit for not only his signature wins that put world titles on his dossier, but also for his willingness to engage in brutal fights while taking punches from some of the best his division had to offer. I think it could be competitive in the early stages but as time progresses Broner will pick apart and stop an inspired Malignaggi in the later rounds (10-12). Malignaggi will most likely end on his feet but he’ll absorb too much punishment."

Broner will be too slick for Malignaggi and even though he will hurt Malignaggi through the fight, he wont fall, Malignaggi has a solid chin. Malignaggi will have his moments of getting to Broner as the two slug it out early but ultimately the judges will score it for Broner, having landed the more effective punches.

Though this fight will most likely not be an action-packed affair, it is one of the contests I’m most looking forward to in the coming months. It’s the crafty, slick old veteran (Malignaggi) against the slick, confident and highly-touted contender (Broner). Most experts agree that Broner is among the few young studs that will rule the sport once the likes of Mayweather, Marquez and Pacquiao exit stage left. I agree. Broner is the real deal and this is by far the stiffest test of his career. Nobody really tears up Malignaggi when he loses but Broner will. His speed, athleticism and confidence will trump everything Paulie tries. He won’t stop Malignaggi but he will dominate him for twelve rounds, winning almost all of them. Broner by unanimous decision.
