Sonjica Is Crowned SA Champ

By Lwazi Ndzobongo at ringside: Thabo Sonjica, (17-2) defeated MacBute Sinyab,(21-3), to win the South African super bantamweight title via unanimous points decision over 12 rounds at the Mdantsane Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The judges scored the fight 118-114, 117-112 and 117-113, all for Sonjica

It was third time lucky for Sonjica after being knocked out twice before by the same fighter. Sinyabi came into the fight expecting the same result as the two previous fights but Sonjica was having none of it. Early on, Sinyabi was throwing and missing with wild punches hoping to catch Sonjica. It wasn’t to be as Sonjica out-boxed, out-smarted and out-punched him.

Sonjica roughed up Sinyabi, some times illegally, hitting behind the head, holding and hitting, rabbit punching, but was able to get away with it. Sinyabi was made to look out of his depth and started tiring in the later rounds when Sonjica was able to hurt him with some solid punches.

From the 10th round onwards, the crowd was already anticipating the result, with shouts of, And the new... going around the ring.

Sonjica got his revenge this afternoon with superior boxing and a well executed game plan. Sinyabi will look back at this rather disappointing performance and hope he had boxed instead of trying to knock the head off Sonjica.

On the undercard Aphiwe Mboyiya (8-0) retained his SA Featherweight title via 12 round unanimous points decision against Lucky Kwaza (7-2). The judges scored the fight 115-114 (twice) and 116-114.

In a fast paced and entertaining bout, Mboyiya had too much skill and stamina for Kwaza. It was Mboyiya’s 1st defence and he showed why at only 21 he is the champion.

Mboyiya took charge of the fight from the 3rd round when his high work rate overwhelmed Kwaza. In the same round, Kwaza started bleeding from the nose and as the fight went on, his eyes and face started swelling. Mboyiya was accurate with his punches, catching Kwaza at will throughout the bout.

Kwaza did come on strong in the championship rounds, looking for the knockout but it was too little, too late as it was the champions hand that was raised at the end.

Under card Results:

Mziwoxolo Ndwayana bt Mzwanele Mkiwane; TKO 3, Welterweight

Nkosana Sobethu bt Mbuyiseli Besta; TKO 5, Featherweight - SA title eliminator

Vusumzi Bokolo bt Zola Thunywa; TKO 2, Eastern Cape Lightweight Title

Mzi Mnguni of Eyethu Promotions was the promoter of this afternoons boxing.
