WBA light welterweight champ Jessie Vargas, 25-0-(9) out-pointed the previously unbeaten Anton Novikov, 29-1-(10), over 12 tough rounds to retain his title at the new “Chelsea” venue inside the luxurious Cosmopolitan Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday night.

Vargas made a fast and furious start but Novikov turned up the pressure and took the fight to the champion in what developed into a battle that was far tougher and more competitive than the 118-111, 118-111, 117-111scores would have one believe.

On the same Top Rank promoted card Brandon Rios,32-2-1-(23), was victorious against Diego Chaves, 23-2-(19), when the Argentine boxer was disqualified in round nine by referee Vic Drakulich

As one can imagine given the styles of both men it was always going to be a brutal and exciting battle while it lasted and that’s exactly what happened from the opening bell.

As the rounds passed Rios seemed to have his nose in front purely by pressuring Chaves but as expected Chaves fought back harder started to edge the fight. However, referee Drakulich deducted a point from Chaves for holding in round three and a point from Rios for shoving Chaves to the canvas in round five, before taking another point from Chaves for pushing his glove in Rios’ face in round eight. In round nine Chaves was deducted another point for holding but this time Drakulich’s patience had ran out and chucked him out after 1:26.

At the time of the disqualification the fight was just getting interesting with Chaves ahead 75-74 on two cards, Rios 75-74 on the third.

“This is not the way I wanted to win,” said a disappointed Rios afterward. “I’m not happy with the way it went.”

Chaves countered:“I think it was unjustified the way I was disqualified, this is a disgrace what they did to me.”

In other action unbeaten middleweight hope Shane Mosley Jr. went 2-0 by taking out Jerome Jones in the opening round.

In a super bantamweight bout Jessie Magdaleno, 19-0-(15), scored a good solid seventh round stoppage win over journeyman Carlos Rodriguez. Magdaleno decked Rodriguez in rounds two, five and six. Rodriguez was deducted a point in round six before the fight was stopped after 2:45 of round seven.
