Velasquez victorious in Puerto Rico

By Jose Santana Jr: Featherweight prospect Carlos Ivan Velasquez remained undefeated with a fifth round stoppage over Eduardo Arcos Friday in Cataño, Puerto Rico. One-half of a twin duo (brother Juan Carlos), Velasquez improved his record to 13-0 (11).

As a 2004 Puerto Rican Olympian and highly touted prospect, Velasquez was fighting for the first time as a professional in his hometown. The 25-year-old Velasquez controlled the fight throughout and used his left hand to do much of the damage. He was able to hurt Arcos, of Tijuana, Mexico, periodically with his stronger punches and had him staggered throughout most of the fifth round.

Velasquez was unable to put Arcos down but the damage he inflicted on him was enough for the referee to stop the fight at the 1:19 mark of round five. Arcos’ record dropped to 15-2 (12) with the loss.

Bantamweight Jonathan “El Pitbull” Vidal won an exciting bout against his toughest opponent to date Felix “La Ardilla” Perez. Vidal hurt Perez on various occasions and was able to drop him in the second and sixth rounds to take a six-round unanimous decision. Vidal, 25, of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, improves his record to 11-0 (7). Perez, of Carolina, Puerto Rico, drops to 7-2 (3).

On the undercard, one of Miguel Cotto Promotions’ more heralded youngsters Luis “El Artesano” Cruz, of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, made quick work of his opponent Juan Jose Beltran knocking him out in the first round of their featherweight bout scheduled for six rounds. Cruz, 24, stays unbeaten with the win improving to 15-0 (12). Beltran, by way of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, is now 22-17-3 (12).

Cataño native Miguel “El Loco” Robles pressured his way to a six-round unanimous decision over Arturo “Sonic” Santiago in the super flyweight division. Santiago, of Lajas, Puerto Rico, was able to land his share of punches at time but not enough to steal the decision. Robles is now 5-1-2 (4) and Santiago is 6-2-1 (5).

The eight-fight card was presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions in association with Golden Boy Promotions and H2 Entertainment and televised on Telefutura in the U.S.
