Ward Bids To Become First Traveller World Champion

Martin Ward is aiming to make history later this month by becoming the first Traveller to win a world title.

The County Durham bruiser challenges IBF bantamweight titleholder Stuart Hall at the Metro Radio Arena, England on March 29th.

And the 26-year-old, who has won 18 of his 20 contests, wants to become the first member of the travelling community to have a world title belt strapped around his waist.

Fellow Travellers Tyson Fury and Billy Joe Saunders were the front-runners to achieve that goal but southpaw Ward has now beaten them to a world title tilt.

The Commonwealth champion said: "This is the great chance for me to make history in the travelling community and become a world champion.

"It would mean so much to be able to go to Appleby Fair this summer with a world title belt, and my stock would rise among my own people.

"It is a challenge, but I have sparred with Stuey and I know what I have got to do to beat him.

"Stuey is a terrific fighter with a lot of heart but I have been putting my tactics to beat into practise during my training camp."

It’s the first time that two boxers from the North East of England have clashed in a genuine world championship contest and Ward aims to make the most of it
