WBC Clarify Junior Middleweight Status
World Boxing Council Official Statement
The WBC ordered a series of fights in the junior middleweight division during its annual convention in Kunming, China.
We are extremely disappointed by the non-compliance of several boxers who had committed to participate in the process. It has caused delays and disrespect to the process, which was regarded to be very interesting for the boxing world.
After analyzing all of the circumstances, the WBC Board of Governors conducted a voting procedure which has resulted in the following final ruling:
- Number 1-ranked contender Jermell Charlo will fight Number 2-ranked John Jackson. The winner will be recognized as WBC world junior middleweight champion and must make two mandatory title defenses.
- WBC Silver champion Charles Hatley, ranked Number 4, has been confirmed as the first mandatory contender after the two final elimination fights ordered by the WBC were cancelled by the withdrawal of Hatley’s opponents.
- Number 3-ranked Demetrius Andrade and Number 10-ranked Willie Nelson will fight, and the winner will be the second mandatory contender of the division.
- Number 6-ranked Ishe Smith and Number 7-ranked Jorge Cota will fight in a semi-final elimination and the winner will be the wildcard of the division.
