Alexander Alekseev retained his European cruiserweight title by virtue of a 12 round draw against former world champ Firat Arslan at the EWS Arena in Goeppingen, Germany on Friday night.
Arslen,32-5-2-(21), who is now 41 years-old was not expected to cope with the younger champion but he competed on equal terms for the first 10 or so rounds and stepped it up in the championship sessions, though Alekseev, 23-2-1-(20), also upped his game. Two of the three judges made the exciting and entertaining battle 114-114 apiece while the third official made Alekseev the winner, 116-113.
On the undercard WBC Mediterranean middleweight champ Goekalp Oezekler, 13-1-(6), won a controversial 12 round split decision over Mouez Fhima, 21-2-1-(8). The scores were 115-114 and 115-113 for Oezekler, while the third official scored 116-112 for Fhima.
