It seems Timothy Bradley’s father is far more excited about his son fighting Manny Pacquiao than he is. The undefeated WBO light-welterweight champ steps up in both weight and class on June 9 to challenge ‘Pac Man’ for his pound for pound No.1 crown and the WBO welterweight belt at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
During an eight year career the Palm Springs, California native has remained unbeaten in 28 professional fights against fairly decent opposition but on June 9 he faces the toughest fight of his entire career.
On Monday, Bradley visited The Desert Sun newspaper offices for a live webcast on mydesert.com. Bradley spent an hour answering many questions and once that was over he shared a unique family moment with liseners when he revealed what his father Tim Bradley Sr had said to him after hearing his son had secured the career defining fight against Pacquiao.
Bradley said: “When I called and I said we got the fight, he said, ‘This is what we’re waiting for, this is what we’re waiting for. We’re going to shock the world, we’re going to shock the world champ. Are you ready for this?’ I said ‘Yes, I’m ready for this, pops.
“Then the phone got quiet,” added Bradley. ‘Dad, dad.’ I could hear him crying in the background. I said, ‘Dad, what are you doing crying?’ My dad doesn’t cry. This is only the third time I heard my dad cry. He doesn’t cry at funerals. He doesn’t cry.
“He said, ‘Son, I’m sorry, it’s tears of joy. That’s all it is, tears of joy.”
