Louis Rose (13-2-1, 5 KOs), made a successful defense of his NABF Junior middleweight title by defeating Andrew Hernandez (9-2-1, 1 KO) by TKO last night at the We-Ko-Pa Resort in Scottsdale, AZ. The event was presented by Roy Jones Jr. Boxing and Iron Boy Promotions.

The fight was exciting from the first bell, Hernandez found a comfortable range and was landing some effective punches on Rose. Hernandez dominated the first two rounds, but Rose did have a nice counter when punches came his way.

In round three, Rose made use of his powerful right, landing some blistering shots on Hernandez. The two continued to trade blows well into the mid-rounds, the action was nothing less than toe-to-toe.

A cut above the right eye of Hernandez had opened up in round five that brought a sense of urgency for him, but Hernandez continued to work his jab. Rose focused on the eye and used his speed to slip in some shots that opened the wound a little more each time.

Both fighters continued to fight with range into the later rounds, the patience of Rose allowed him to spot opportunity and take advantage against a very crafty Andrew Hernandez. Numerous times Hernandez had Rose pinned at the ropes, and numerous times Rose found a way to box his way out.

In the eighth and final round both fighters continued to trade blows, a hard right thrown by Rose got the attention of Hernandez, but Hernandez just would not go away. What Hernandez lacked in speed was replaced by heart and pure grit. Rose continued walking Hernandez down and spotted an opening, and again threw a blistering right that finally dropped Hernandez backwards and to the canvas.

Hernandez dug deep and managed to stagger to his feet, veteran referee Wes Melton could see Hernandez was done and wisely called a halt to the bout. The official time of the stoppage was 2:02of round eight, awarding the win to Louis Rose by TKO.

Without a doubt, this bout was a nail-biter to the very end, both fighters were put on a great show and the crowd was not disappointed. It was a good win for Louis Rose, he proved he is a champion. The key for Rose was the fact that he listened to his corner and made adjustments, his patience allowed him to find openings and take advantage. For Andrew Hernandez it’s back to the drawing board, he will fight another day. He is a solid fighter that has the heart and grit of a lion, his performance was stellar and he has nothing to be ashamed about.
