Zsolt Erdei: A New Beginning

Jerry Glick reporting: The first thing that you notice about Hungarian born former WBO Light-heavyweight and WBC Cruiserweight Champion Zsolt Erdei is his size. When heavyweight champions were the size of today’s cruiserweights they still looked big, but at 5’8” and a fraction, Erdei isn’t very big. His ability to win fights remains big and his new promoter, Lou DiBella of DiBella Entertainment is banking on that.

On Monday the media gathered to watch Erdei workout at the Trinity Boxing Gym in lower Manhattan. What was most evident to the observer was Erdi’s speed of hand. He worked out with different bags and bounced a ball to improve timing. He shadow boxed and answered questions as did his manager Christof Hawerkamp, on the European Title; “He’s a two time world champion, why should he compete for a European Title?” Promoter Lou DiBella on a possible future meeting with Hopkins; “Hopkins wants to kick his ass,” and Ambassador Karoly Dan, the Hungarian Council General to the United Nations on Erdei’s popularity; “He’s a role model in Hungary. Not only is he a great boxer, but he’s a wonderful man.”

Undefeated Erdei, 31-0 (17), is scheduled to fight journeyman Samson Onyango, 20-6 (13). on the Sergio Martinez-Paul Williams card at Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday November 20th.
