By Lwazi Ndzobongo: Thabiso Mchunu won back his ABU Cruiserweight Title and retained his South African Cruiserweight Title via twelve round unanimous points decision against Thomas Oosthuizen here at Emperors Palace in the East of Johannesburg, South Africa.

The judges scored the fight 119-109, 118-111 and 119-111, giving Mchunu his revenge on a card aptly named Repeat or Revenge. Mchunu did what he was meant to do the first time round and schooled Oosthuizen in a one sided bout from start to finish. Mchunu’s punches were accurate and heavy, rocking Oosthuizen‘s head backwards with every landed shot.

Oosthuizen was never in the fight tonight and it was visible from the beginning that he was carrying a bit of extra weight around the midsection. Maybe he didn’t train as hard having won the first controversial fight, his speed and nifty footwork were a thing of the past. It was Mchunu who had the dancing shoes this time and left no question marks on who the victor was this time round.

Mchunu will look to go back to the international scene and climb the rankings to get a shot at a world title. His promoter Rodney Berman of Golden Gloves made it clear that there would be no Mchunu against Kevin Lerena fight, which would have been a mouthwatering local affair.

Mbenge retains title

Thulani Mbenge retained his IBO welterweight Title via TKO in the tenth round against Miguel Vazquez. Vazquez failed to make it out of his corner for the tenth round after being knocked down by a body punch in the seventh.

Mbenge started hot, throwing every punch with bad intentions and frequently testing the body, he controlled the first four rounds with his long jab and bombarding the body often. Mbenge hurt Vazquez a few times leading up to the retirement.

Between rounds 4 to 6, Mbenge seemed to have run out of ideas and had the Mexican appear to be getting back into the fight as he abandoned his jab and went headhunting. Luckily for Mbenge, he was able to close the show and discourage any hope in the seventh with the knock down and continued to show his superiority until the stoppage.

Mbenge continues to impress and is improving with every fight, looking forward to seeing how he fairs in the USA in 2019, he improved to 15-0.
