Featherweight results from day 3

Day three of the Boxing tournament in Athens saw one of the closest bouts so far in Athens, 2004 when Brazilian Edvaldo Oliveira won on the count back rule against Puerto Rican Carlos Velazquez. The lead changed hands more or less throughout the contest with neither man ever more than two points ahead of the other. The scores at the end of four highly entertaining rounds saw the score 43-43 before the countback rule came into play.

Young Cuban featherweight Franco Vazquez looked very impressive in destroying Asylbex Talasbaev by 32-15. Vazquez was disadvantaged by both reach and height but managed to get inside with quick and accurate counter punching. The 18 year-old Cuban really is one to watch.

Romanian Viorel Simeon was just far too busy and experienced for the Australian Ryan Langham, winning comfortably by 40-15

Simeon took the fight to the Sydney based southpaw from the opening bell by smothering Langham with quick and accurate punches to move into a 7 point lead before the Australian could register a point. It just went from bad to worse for Langham as Simeon again stepped up the pace to rack up more points to claim a clear victory.

In other featherweight (57 kgs) bouts Mikhail Biarnadski from Belarus out-pointed Liker Ramos Concha by 32-18 and Germany's Vitali Tajbert stopped Argentina's Daniel Brizuela in the third session. Also Khedafi Djelkhir from France out-pointed Tunisian Saifeddine Nejmaoui 38:13.

Kamsing retires after defeat.

Thailand's former Olympic Gold medallist Somluck Kamsing has announced his retirement after being dumped out of the Athens 2004 competition at the very first stage. Kamsing, who struck Gold in Atlanta in 1996 was out-pointed by Canadian Ben Gaudet by 32-17. Kamsing was all too often slower to the punch despite a strong final round rally.

In the first bout of the evening session Korean Jo Seok Hwan came out on top in a keenly contested battle against Turkey's Sedat Tasci 37-28

Uzbekistan featherweight Belzod Khidirov was far too experienced for Pakistan's Sohail Ahmed, who was stopped when the score reached 28-8, the 20 point gap needed to enforce the outclassed rule.
