By Danny Winterbottom: Former Prizefighter champion and world title challenger Willie “Big Bang” Casey scored a split decision victory over British boxing stalwart Jason Booth on the huge “Summer Rumble 2” card at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland on Sunday July 15. In doing so he collected the vacant WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight title and the inaugural WBA European 8st 10lb strap. Scores of 116-112 and 115-114 twice secured victory for the Irishman.
Limerick southpaw Casey, 8st 9lbs, found himself on the canvas in the opener but the referee deemed it a slip and no count was administered. Booth, 8st 9.5lbs, was always in the contest but couldn’t repeat the win he had over Michael Hunter the last time he visited the North East, losing for the fourth time in a row and falling to 36-10 (15). Casey improves to 13-2 (9) and will be looking to push on with his career.
