Enzo Maccarinelli’s, 38-7-(30), dream of becoming Wale’s first two weight world champion were crushed at the Stadthalle in Rostock, Germany on Saturday night when Juergen Braehmer, 43-2-(32), forced him to retire in the fifth round to retain his WBA light heavyweight title.
In a bloody battle both Braehmer and Maccarinelli suffered damage to the right eye in the opening round. Braehmer was cut and Maccarinelli suffered swelling. Braehmer stepped up the pace in round two, bashing Maccarinelli and breaking him down.
To his credit, Maccarinelli tried to land the big shot but his eye was so badly swollen he found it hard to see. The ring doctor allowed the former WBO cruiserweight champ to continue and he did pressure Braehmer but his face was swelling up so badly by round five that his corner pulled him out at the end of the round.
On the undercard Jack Culcay out-pointed Salim Larbi over 12 rounds in a bout for the WBA Inter-Continental light middleweight title. The scores were 117-111 on all three judges cards.
In a WBO Youth super middleweight title bout Tyron Zeuge scored a ninth round tko win over Gheorghe Sabau. The bout was stopped after 0.39 of the round.
Soufiene Ouerghi, 7-3-( 4) , won an eight round majority decision over Dominik Britsch, 28-2-1-(9), in a rematch. Te pair have now won one each.
At welterweight Lewis Rees and Renald Garrido battled to an eight round draw.
light heavyweight Enrico Koelling, 13-0-(4),remained unbeaten by out pointing Bajrektarevic, 8-2-(4 ), over eight rounds.
At light middleweight Liam Williams, 9-0-1-(4), scored an eighth round stoppage win over journeyman Yuri Pompilio.
Unbeaten Kubrat Pulev, the IBF No.1 contender smashed late sub Ivica Perkovic until he failed to answer the bell for round four.
