Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: Bob Duffy and his Ring Promotions along with David Schuster’s Winner Take All Promotions, put on a great day/night show of fine theater, and nine hotly contested fights in Franklin Square, NY on Saturday night.
First Bobby Cassidy Jr. reprised his acclaimed play, "Kid Shamrock" about his dad Bobby Sr. who was a top light-heavyweight and middleweight during the 60’s and 70’s, followed by a night of boxing.
In the main event Michael Brooks won a unanimous eight round decision over difficult Joey Arroyo. Going eight rounds for the first time, Brooks didn’t fight his fight during the first two rounds, but got into his game from the third frame on. All three judges saw him the winner with scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 78-74.
Brooks, 135 pounds, is now 9-0 (2 KOs), and Arroyo, 131 pounds, fell to 3-3-1 (0 KOs). Brooks wins the IBA Youth Lightweight Title. Pete Santiago refereed.
Cindy Serrano, 133 pounds, won the vacant WIBA International Lightweight Title with an eight round unanimous decision over game but inept Kerri Hill, 4-23-1 (1 KO). Serrano was too fast and hit too often for the willing but limited Hill, 134 ½ pounds. The decision went as follows; 80-72 twice and 79-73 all for Serrano who also picked up her first win since 2007. Sparkle lee refereed.
Highly regarded Santander Silgado, 197 pounds, 22-0 (18 KOs), out slugged journeyman Joell Godfrey, 196 pounds, 14-8-1 (6 KOs), as they worked inside along the ropes for most of the eight rounds they spent together. The judges score it 79-73 twice and 80-72 for Silgado. Arthur Mercante refereed.
