Cornelius Bundrage retained his IBF light middleweight title, stopping Cory Spinks in the seventh round at the Fantasy Springs Casino Events Center in Indio, California on Saturday night. Bundrage ,32-4 (19 ) floored Spinks with a right hand in the opening round.
Whenever Spinks, 39-7-(11),felt the full force of Bundrage’s power he would hold on. Bundrage decked Spinks three more times in the seventh round with a solid right hand and a combination of punches, prompting referee Ray Corona to stop the fight after 2:32 of the seventh. Bundrage could face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 15.
On the undercard world rates light middleweight Erislandy Lara won a tough 10 round unanimous decision over Freddy Hernandez. Lara, 17-1-1-(11), looked as though he was winning most of the exchanges beating Hernandez to the punch by landing short right hooks to the head.
To his credit Hernandez, 30-3 1ND-(20), stayed with Lara in the exchanges but Lara was just that one step ahead resulting the judges making him the winner by scores of 99-90, 98-91, and 95-94.
In a featherweight bout Gary Russell Jr. stopped Christopher Perez in the third round of a scheduled 10 rounder. Russell, 20-0-(12), floored Perez with a left and right hand combo. Perez , 23-3-(14) survived the round, but was floored in the third round with a hard left hand Perez was decked twice more in the round. After the third knockdown, referee Pat Russell stopped the bout after 1:41.
light welterweight Antonio Orozco stopped the outgunned Albert Cruz Jr. in the third round of a scheduled eight round bout and at Flyweight Christian Lorenzo stopped Javier Barragan in the third round of a scheduled four round.
