By Andrew Rivera at ringside: Julio Caesar Chavez Jr defeated Andy Lee in the seventh round in front of 40,000 fans at the Sun Bowl in El Paso Texas on Saturday night. Chavez Jr used his strength to overpower Lee in his most impressive win to date.
Chavez showed he could take his time and adjust during the fight, Lee who presented Chavez with his toughest test used his jab to set the pace early using it to keep Chavez Jr at a distance but this would last until Chavez Jr felt Lee could not hurt him.
"He was strong and tall but once I knew he couldn’t hurt me I picked up the pace." said Chavez Jr
Once Chavez figured he could get through Lee’s jab he put more pressure on Lee. Lee was able to box to get a lead on the official scorecards but it was a matter of time before Chavez Jr would break him down.
Both fighters had their moments in the fifth round but Chavez’s punches definitely had the more damaging effect.
Chavez landed a huge combination that had Lee in trouble in round seven, from there he continued his onslaught until referee Laurence Cole halted the action going Chavez Jr his 46 win (46-0-1) setting up a middleweight showdown with Sergio Martinez
Lee, who was able to box well early was ahead on the score cards at 58-54 falls to 28-2.
It should be an interesting battle in September for Chavez as Martinez Is a slicker boxer then Lee and has power as well.
