Panamanian puncher Ammeth Diaz ruined Martin Gethin’s chances of a world title shot when he stopped the British boxer in the seventh round in Walsall, England on Friday night.
The British lightweight champ finished up with a badly beaten up face after seven rounds and earned Diaz a rematch with IBF lightweight king Miguel Vazquez
A disappointed and battered Gethin said afterwards "Diaz, is a very good fighter.
"He can punch and my ear was perforated in the fifth and it knocked me and the gameplan went out of the window to an extent. It’s all come very quickly - I only won the British title in my last fight - so my head isn’t dropping too much.’’
Diaz, 31-11-(22), made his presence felt from the start by landing a heavy uppercut, forcing Gethin, 23-3-1-(11), to rethink his game plan and box from the outside. Gethin did have his successes but Diaz obviously carried the heavier firepower and it was always going to be a big ask of the Briton to pull off an upset.
