Jerry Glick reporting from ringside: New Legends, Old World, and now add to that a third promoter, W.O.N. Promotions together put on a show that supplied the packed house at the Cordon Bleu in Woodhaven, Queens, NY with enough thrills to keep fans asking for more long after the show was over. This is the latest installment in a series of fights cards where the promotional teams involved are interested in making everyone happy. Matchmaker Felipe Gomez put together a show that he could be proud. Drawing from local talent (all but two of the participants on the show were from New York State), and using them in a creative way to make seven fights that showcased some of the better young battlers available.
This was to be Jonathan Cuba’s first successful defense of the NYS Lightweight belt that he won last September, but he found that opponent Edward Valdez. 134 pounds, was a little too difficult to handle. Valdez, 9-8-2 (6 KOs), did not come to lose. He could not miss with his right and was able to land combinations that helped the judges give him the eight round decision by scores of 78-74, 80-72, and 79-73. Cuba, 133 pounds saw his record fall to 6-4-1 (4 KOs). David Fields refereed.
