By Marc Livitz at ringside in San Antonio: Texas native Omar Figueroa scored an impressive first round knockout over Abner Cotto in the evening’s co-main event. The first of two bouts televised on Showtime ended at the 2:57 mark. Each fighter started aggressively, yet it was beyond clear that Figueroa (21(17)-0-1) would close the show early after he landed multiple left hooks to the head of his Caguas, Puerto Rico opponent. A bit more than two minutes had passed in the first round before Figueroa dropped Cotto (16(7)-1(1)).
Although the brave Abner rose to his feet, Omar wasted to no time and landed a thunderous body shot to send the Puerto Rican to the canvas for a second time. There would be no getting up this time. Referee Jon Schorle reached the count of ten and Omar Figueroa of Weslaco, Texas left the ring with the no longer vacant NABA and WBC International Silver lightweight titles.
